Universal Studios Orlando is not the park most people picture when they first think of Orlando. Disney tends to get all the attention, but Universal has something the mouse’s parks cannot replicate: the feeling of being literally inside the movies that shaped your childhood and your kids’. Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Minions, The Mummy. If your family is going for the first time in 2026, there are things worth knowing before you buy the tickets.
Universal Orlando Resort has two main parks: Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. They are connected by CityWalk, a dining, shopping and entertainment zone that requires no ticket. Many families make the mistake of planning just one day for both parks, and that day ends up exhausting and rushed.
The reality is that each park deserves between 6 and 8 hours to enjoy without rushing. If you are traveling with kids under 10, the pace slows down even further. Plan for at least two full days if you want to leave without the feeling that you missed half of it.
In 2026, Universal Epic Universe opens as the resort’s third park, with themed worlds dedicated to Harry Potter, Nintendo, How to Train Your Dragon and more. It is the largest expansion in Universal’s history and will completely change the dynamics of the resort. If your visit coincides with the opening, add at least one extra day to the itinerary.
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure remains the most popular attraction at the resort, and for good reason. It is a story-driven roller coaster with animatronic creatures, practical effects and a ride that lasts over two minutes. The line can reach 90 minutes during peak hours, so it should be the first stop of the day.
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is perfect for families with young kids. It is a 3D motion simulation, smooth enough for little ones to enjoy without fear.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is for the teenagers and adults in the group. It is a vertical roller coaster with a personalized music selection. Not suitable for kids who do not meet the height requirement.
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man remains one of the best simulation attractions in the world, even after all these years. It combines physical vehicles, 3D effects and live-action scenes in a way few attractions manage.
Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the most intense coaster at the resort. Speed, inversions and a lake view that lasts exactly the right number of seconds before the next curve takes your breath away. For the brave ones in the group only.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter spans both parks: Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley at Universal Studios. If your family loves the saga, plan generous time in both areas. The Butterbeer, the train connecting the two worlds and the themed shops are all part of the experience.

Universal tickets are available through the official website or app. Buying in advance is always cheaper than at the gate on the day, and during peak season the difference can be $20 to $40 per person.
Main options for 2026:
Universal Vacation Packages combine tickets with an on-site hotel and often include Early Park Admission, which allows entry one hour before official opening. In peak season, that hour is worth a lot.
Traveling to Universal with kids takes a bit more planning than with adults. A few things that make a real difference:
Height requirements: several attractions have a minimum height between 40 and 48 inches. Check the restrictions before going so the kids do not face disappointment in line.
Child Swap: Universal has a policy that allows adults to take turns on attractions where kids do not meet the height minimum, without having to wait in line twice. Ask at the entrance of each attraction.
Best times to go with kids: arrive when the park opens and use the first two hours for the most popular attractions. After midday, lines double. Between 2 pm and 4 pm is a good window for eating, exploring themed areas without rushing and saving the quieter attractions for the end of the day.
Universal Express Pass: Universal’s skip-the-line system. Worth it during peak season or if the group includes young kids who get tired of waiting. It is purchased separately from the ticket and prices vary by date.
This is the most frequently asked question, and the honest answer depends on your family:
If your itinerary also includes Disney World, SeaWorld or the water parks, the logistics shift. Staying in a central location like Kissimmee or near I-4 saves travel time between parks and gives more useful hours to each day. Our 5-day Orlando itinerary guide covers how to distribute your time if you are planning to visit several parks on the same trip.
Food inside the park is expensive, as it is at any theme park. But there are ways to manage it without going hungry or spending twice as much.
Three Broomsticks (Hogsmeade) and The Leaky Cauldron (Diagon Alley) are the most popular themed restaurants in the park. The food is reasonably good for a theme park and the atmosphere makes it worth the experience. Ideal for the lunch stop on Harry Potter day.
Mythos Restaurant (Islands of Adventure) has a reputation as one of the best restaurants inside a theme park in the entire United States. Book in advance if you plan to eat there.
The smartest strategy: have a solid breakfast at the vacation home before heading out, pack snacks and water in the backpack and plan just one meal inside the park as part of the themed experience.
With two parks, the minimum recommendation is two days. If Epic Universe is already open in 2026, three days is ideal so you do not feel like you missed anything important.
It depends on the ages. Disney has more options for kids ages 2 to 6. Universal is designed for kids 7 and up, teenagers and adults. For groups with kids of different ages, the best approach is to visit both.
Arrive when the park opens, use the Universal Express Pass during peak season and download the official app to see live wait times. Mondays and Tuesdays tend to have less crowd than weekends.
Only if you purchase the Park-to-Park ticket. With a one-park ticket, once you leave you cannot enter the other park. If you plan to visit both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley on the same day, the Park-to-Park is mandatory.
Universal has a Child Swap policy that allows adults to take turns without waiting in line twice. There are also plenty of attractions with no height restriction so younger kids can have a full and fun day.
With the opening of Epic Universe, this is probably the best moment in the resort’s history to visit Universal Orlando for the first time. The park has more content, more themed worlds and more reasons to stay for several days. If your family is going to Orlando in 2026, do not leave it out of the itinerary.
