Orlando doesn’t come up first in most conversations about golf destinations in the United States. That spot belongs to Scottsdale, Palm Beach, and Pebble Beach. But there’s something those destinations don’t have: 72 million tourists per year, which means Orlando’s golf courses are constantly competing to maintain the highest standards to attract players who also visit parks, shop, and bring their families.
The result is a density of quality courses that surprises first-time visitors.
The answer has two parts.
The first is geographic. Central Florida has weather that supports golf 12 months a year, with nuances. Summer is hot and includes frequent afternoon rain, but that doesn’t prevent morning rounds. Winter is mild compared to any northern state, which makes Orlando a golf getaway destination from December through March for players from New York, Chicago, or Boston.
The second is the resort community business model. Communities like ChampionsGate, Reunion Resort, and Mystic Dunes were built around golf. The course isn’t an extra, it’s the main argument for why homeowners pay more and visitors choose that community. That forces the courses to remain in permanent top condition.
Two courses here: the National Course and the International Course, both designed by Greg Norman. The National Course is more accessible in terms of difficulty; the International Course has characteristics that place it in the range of real challenge for low-handicap players.
Access to both courses is direct from the ChampionsGate community where Top Stay has several properties, meaning you can walk or drive 5 minutes to the first tee.
Rates vary by season, but the typical range for visitors runs $70-$140 per round during peak season (December through April). Packages including cart and practice range are available.
Three courses in one community: the Watson Course (Tom Watson design), the Nicklaus Course (Jack Nicklaus), and the Palmer Course (Arnold Palmer). Three legends, one resort.
Reunion is one of the most premium communities in the Orlando area, and the courses reflect that level. The Nicklaus Course in particular receives the most mentions from players with experience on international courses.
Access is for resort guests, which includes those staying in villas within the community through Top Stay.
Important detail: Reunion courses see high demand in season. Booking 2-3 weeks ahead is necessary from January through April.
18-hole course with a design that uses the natural terrain of the area, including some holes with elevation changes and pronounced sand obstacles. It doesn’t have the design legacy of Reunion’s signature names, but current course conditions and green quality are consistently solid in recent reviews.
The advantage of Mystic Dunes is price accessibility: rates run $50-$90, making it an option for travelers who want to play multiple days without the golf budget becoming the most expensive line item of the trip.
Two courses here: Panther Lake and Crooked Cat. These are public courses with open access, making them more democratic in price and availability. Located in the Winter Garden area, they’re about 30 minutes from the main Top Stay communities.
These are favorites among local residents and repeat visitors who know the market and don’t want to pay resort rates. Conditions are good though not at the premium level of ChampionsGate or Reunion.

The format that works best for mixed groups where not everyone plays: golf in the morning for the players, afternoon at the pool or parks for everyone else.
A standard 18-hole round with cart takes 4-4.5 hours. Starting at 7 AM, you’re back at the villa before noon. The rest of the day stays open.
This works because the communities where Top Stay operates have courses with early tee times (some open from 6:30 AM) and the properties are a short drive away.
If you’re traveling from Latin America and prefer not to bring your clubs, renting at the course is a viable option at all the courses mentioned. Rentals include clubs and cart, with additional charges of $30-$50.
Florida terrain differs from many Latin American courses: generally flatter, with well-defined sand traps and bermuda greens that behave differently than poa annua or bentgrass greens. For first-time visitors, hitting a few practice range balls before the first round is worth it.
Home Vacation keeps villa garages clean and accessible. Golf bags fit comfortably in a standard Top Stay villa garage, and between-round storage isn’t an issue.
Course conditions. There are excellent courses throughout Latin America, but the density of international-level courses within 30 minutes of each other is hard to match. In a week in Orlando, you can play three completely different courses without driving more than 30 minutes between them.
The April weather. Morning temperatures between 64°F and 72°F are ideal for golf. No extreme summer heat, no frequent August rain. April and May are the months local residents prefer for golf because courses aren’t saturated with peak-season visitors and conditions are perfect.
The setting. Playing on a course surrounded by Florida flora, with herons that frequently appear near water hazards, is a visual experience that more urban Latin American courses can’t replicate.
Can I book tee times before arriving in Orlando?
Yes, and it’s recommended for Reunion courses during peak season. Each course website has an online booking system.
Do the courses have dress codes?
Most require golf attire (no jeans, athletic shoes with spikes or soft spikes). ChampionsGate and Reunion are stricter than public courses like Orange County National.
Is it worth buying a golf + accommodation package?
It can make sense for groups going primarily to play golf. Top Stay can advise on which properties in which communities offer the best access.
Are caddies available?
Reunion and ChampionsGate have caddies available on request. Not the standard but the option exists.
Which course is best for a beginner?
Mystic Dunes or Panther Lake at Orange County National. Both have quality practice ranges and are more accessible in terms of difficulty.
